Concept

The realization of a hydrogen society is expected to contribute to reducing the effects of global warming and improving energy security.

Ammonia is the leading option for hydrogen energy carriers.

To establish a value chain that extends from the distribution of CO2-free ammonia to the use of it,

CFAA will dedicate itself to conducting studies on technological and economic assessment, developing policy proposals, and in promoting international collaboration.

Message from the President

To achieve sustainable growth that balances energy and the environment, it is imperative that we urgently reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide emissions. Many countries, including Japan, are accelerating their efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Under such circumstances, fuel ammonia is increasingly expected to be an effective solution.

The fuel ammonia industry was listed as one of the 14 priority areas in the “Green Growth Strategy for Carbon Neutrality in 2050” formulated in December 2020. A Cabinet Decision on the Sixth Strategic Energy Plan approved in October 2021 stipulated that hydrogen and ammonia should make up 1% of the power supply mix in 2030.

President Shigeru Muraki

The Strategic Innovation Program (SIP) of the Cabinet Office from 2014 to 2018 described that ammonia can be utilized as a zero-emission fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide when burned. It is also the most effective energy carrier for storing and transporting renewable energy. While technological development for social implementation has continued, the Public-Private Council for Fuel Ammonia Introduction was established in October 2020 to accelerate efforts toward social implementation of fuel ammonia, in collaboration with private companies, including consumers and suppliers, and the government. We will commit to playing a leading role in the Council and we are working to build a value chain from the supply of fuel ammonia to its use.

Stable supply and cost reduction are crucial for the social implementation of fuel ammonia. For this, it is essential that Japanese companies actively participate in the development of the supply chain infrastructure for manufacturing, transportation, storage, and receiving of ammonia, focused on the utilization side. This includes direct combustion and co-combustion technologies, in which Japan is already a world leader, as well promotion of governmental support measures and public-private partnerships.
Since its establishment in 2019, CFAA has served as an intermediary between industry, academia, and government in conducting studies on technological and economic assessment, in developing policy proposals, and in promoting international collaboration. We will continue to contribute to the early social implementation of fuel ammonia, decarbonization, and the growth of the Japanese industry.

I personally thank you most sincerely for your commitment to CFAA and I welcome your valuable contributions to our common interest.
